Technical Session 4.4 - Road Tunnel Operations and Safety

This Technical Session is organized by PIARC Committee TC4.4 on Tunnels. It will present the work accomplished by the Committee during the 2020-2023 work cycle on the following issues (according to the SP 2020-2023):

  • Improving road tunnel resilience, considering safety and availability (issue 4.4.1)
  • Good practices in maintenance and traffic operation of heavily trafficked urban tunnels (issue 4.4.2)
  • Impact of new propulsion technologies (NEC) on road tunnel operations and safety (issue 4.4.3)
  • Support for updating and improving of DG-QRAM (issue 4.4.7)
  • Overview of other TC4.4 activities (Seminars, Workshops, Conferences (issue 4.4.6), Road Tunnel Manual (issue 4.4.5) and ITS in tunnels (issue 4.4.4)).

This session will also present the best articles identified through PIARC’s international call for papers on call topic 47: Digitalization of Road Tunnel Design and Management. An additional focus of the session will be on challenges of LMIC in tunnel design, construction, maintenance and safe operation. The session will conclude with an outlook to the new topics which will be addressed by TC4.4 in the coming PIARC work cycle.
