Technical Session 4.3 - Earthworks
Wednesday, October 4

18:00
Chair: Mr. Patrick Boisson, Chair of PIARC TC 4.3 Earthworks, France
Room: South Hall 2, 2nd floor
Did you know that Earth Structures and therefore earthworks represent up to 80% of the linear of the infrastructures in the world? When a natural hazard hit a transportation infrastructure, almost the overall of the disasters are linked to an Earth Structure: embankments, natural slopes, cuts, etc. This should help you to attend the presentation of the work of TC 4. 3 Earthworks relating to this subject.
The Technical Committee 4.3 Earthworks worked during 4 years on three topics:
1. The resilience of earthworks to the effects of climate change and in particular how to increase the resilience of Earth Structures against natural hazards.
We produced 3 deliverables:
- an unprecedented and very complete bibliographic study in our field,
- a compilation of case studies,
- and finally, a report which propose a methodology to improve the resilience of Earth Structure against Natural Hazards.
2. Techniques and innovations:
Because we trust in our ability to make better Earthworks in the future, we produced 2 outputs that focused on:
- a compilation of 36 case studies of recent unusual techniques and innovations,
- a report that makes sense between Techniques, Innovation and Improving Resilience.
3. The writing of a Practical Manual on Earthworks.
The Manual, although we still have a few chapters to write, offers a good idea of earthmoving techniques.
During the first part of our Technical Session 4.3 we will present all these works and in second part, we will give the floor to 4 authors from Czech Republic, Japan, Spain and Canada that emphasize the urgent need to adapt Earthworks to climate change and futures challenges in our domain.
As the chair of TC4.3 Earthworks, I would like to thank the presenters of the session and all the members of TC 4.3 for their outstanding work over the past four years.
